The Eternal City

May the sky fall on the eternal city, it would just enhance the beauty.

Empires come and go, and yes, still nowadays, but this city remains.

The Roman Empire with Rome as capital ended in the year 476 CE but its remains can still be seen.

After that year only the Eastern Roman Empire remained in modern-day Turkey with Constantinople as capital which we know nowadays as Istanbul, it lasted until the year 1453.

The old Romans had some kind of social media: The walls of buildings! They wrote down many different things.

From advertisements like room available or “this insula is available to rent from 1 July” over “20 gladiators are fighting in Pompeji on the 15th, 16th, and 17th” to declaring “Marcus loves Spendusa”.

Sometimes even hotel critics like: “We’ve peed into the bed. Our fault, I admit it. But, host, do you want to know why? There was no chamber pot”.

And finally someone wrote: “Dear wall, I am surprised that you didn’t crumble yet under all the crap people write onto you”.
