The Autostadt or Automobile City is a large museum complex next to the main Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, where the largest car company in the world has its headquarters.

It was opened in 2000 and features pavilions for each brand of Volkswagen Group as well as the Zeithaus or Time House, a museum for old cars, and the two car towers, silos which store new cars until they are being picked up by the customers.

The success of Volkswagen, nowadays largest car company in the world, started with the Type 1 which is colloquially called Beetle. During the Nazi era Ferdinand Porsche was asked to construct a People’s Car, in German Volkswagen, although it was also called KdF-Wagen at the beginning.

However, production never really started during World War II, only after its end the British decided to build the Volkswagen Type 1, it became a success. Later the Type 2 or VW Bus was constructed on the platform of the Beetle. Production of the VW Beetle ended in 2003 in Mexico. In the nineties the VW New Beetle was introduced.

The emerge of the modern Audi brand, here displayed in the Autostadt at Volkswagen headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany. The original Audi, Horch, Wanderer, and DKW merged in 1932 to Auto Union.

In 1969 the company NSU was bought by Volkswagen and Audi NSU Auto Union AG was formed which was later renamed Audi AG. The photo shows the Audi F103, the first modern Audi, developed from the NSU F103.

Volkswagen Group also competes in different motorsports series. The different generations of the VW Race Touareg won the Dakar Rally several times. Volkswagen also competed in the WRC, Porsche in WEC and Formula E and most recently Audi entered Formula One.
