An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 has struck Morocco on 8 September 2023, the epicentre was located 73 km southwest of Marrakesh, near the town of Ighli.
Morocco is located at the Azores-Gibraltar Transform Fault which is the boundary between the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate.
The earthquake damaged or destroyed buildings in Marrakesh and could still be felt in Fez where pieces of furniture fell off walls and ceilings.
Several earthquakes happened in Morocco in the last hundreds of years, on 27 November 1755 a similarly strong one happened with the epicentre being in Meknes near Fez. The last deadly one occurred on 24 February 2004.
