Karl May wrote this around 1900. As if he foresaw a time when even the US president behaves uncivilised and helps damaging this planet.
Remarkably the character who said it, Sir John Raffley, was on the way to north west Sumatra, nowadays a region with one of the most extremist and intolerant Islamic communities in Indonesia.
